Pepsi as it was MEANT to be enjoyed, with real sugar

Pepsi Throwback

Pepsi throwback. They also released Mountain Dew in the “throwback” version. What is this? It’s Pepsi as it was originally meant to be, without the high fructose corn syrup. The sugar they are using for this is a blend of cane and beet sugar. I used to live in Europe and over there the Pepsi was so wonderful and crisp and it was not until I later found out, that’s because they do not allow high fructose corn syrup in their products. I have alot to say on that topic but I’ll save that rant for another post. The difference however is unmistakable.  As to whether or not Pepsi might decide to permanently make this change, I seriously doubt it. The fact is, high fructose corn syrup is a much cheaper alternative and the bottom line is, they are in business to make money. Period.
So if you can still find them, enjoy them while they last because I don’t think you will see them for long. I know you can buy coke products still made with  real cane sugar in some of the western states because that is how they sell them in Mexico. These are also sold in the old style glass coke bottles. They actually recycle their bottles, none of that plastic crap that we are so fond of. If you ever take a trip out of this country, this is but one of the gems you will find.
The caffeine content is the same no matter what version you buy, 38mg. Mountain Dew is 54mg. Caffeine aside. Did you also know that soda in actually clear in color? Dark caramel coloring is added to the mix. For some reason people don’t like drinking Pepsi when it’s clear. They tried a while back to make a go of it, they called it Pepsi clear. It didn’t’ work and disappeared quickly. Being that it had the exact same taste, why then did it disappear? Apparently our sense of sight should not be underestimated when it comes to what we like to eat. If we don’t like the way it looks, subconsciously you will not like it. Interesting.  No matter what the cause or which version  you prefer, it is important to remember that moderation is key. There really is no redeeming quality to any soda and while I love the taste, I still am very aware of the negative side effects.  So find a throwback if you can, or check your local Mexican grocery store for a bottled coke and enjoy coke (or Pepsi) as it was originally intended.
